First Impression of Nikon Df

Friday, March 14, 2014

Awhile back during Origins event, Nikon was one of the collaborating company. Their main purpose for the collaboration is actually to teach ladies how to take better self-photography (selfie).

This came as a surprise because the Origins invitation did not mention any learn to take photography session.

I was so excited because as a NIKON FAN and PROUD owner of Nikon DSLR D5100, this essentially become one of my favorite event ever.

The Nikon Df

And immediately come into my mind was i need to figure out the ISO, Shutter Speed and compensation exposure, because i did notice that the camera did not come with a flash.

In a low lighting setting i usually use compensation exposure to compensate the lack of light in the room and some minor setting adjustment on the white balance etc etc. (Boring stuff if you not into camera).

It was a pain to figure out how to adjust the ISO because this camera was new in the market and i did not have a chance to google and check out the "how to use" manual. Thankfully one of the event photographer who is very helpful and finally figure out for me.

See the little tiny button at the corner -  you need to hold it down in order to turn the ISO dial. So happy to finally crack the "code"

And i was working with a 50mm lens with a f/1.8G. Perfect camera for portrait shots and if you know how to work, it has a great depth of field (Clear object, blur background).

My initial image does not turn out well due to the low ISO setting. But after the adjustment, image turn out almost perfect and this motivates me to get a 50mm lens as a investment to take more of this shot!

The body of the Df is definitely a collector item, the design of the classic retro designed body that pairs up with the most talk about AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G (Special Edition) lens cost $3,999.

  • 16MP - FX format
  • EXPEED 3 image processing engine
  • ISO range of 100 – 12800 (expandable from 50 to 204800)
  • Weight - 710 grams
  • 39 Autofocus System
  • Picture Control System
  • and many more.. but let me spare you for now.

My dream of owning it immediately went down the drain~! By the way if you are curious, i DID dream of owning it for many days until i saw the price online. :(

But if you are a collector of Nikon camera and have that extra cash to spare to purchase a DSLR that have the technology of a heavy contender and weight of a entry level dslr AND do not mind the lack of in-build flash.

I suggest to go get it and bring out to take outdoor shoot. Be it day or night. I always think using a bounce off wall flash takes beautiful picture with they are indoor. But for outdoor night scenery bring a tripod along and make use of the wide ISO range and take the perfect scenery that would wow many audience.

I hope this first impression quick review and all the camera technical terms does not bored you or make me sound stupid. And i do not mean to sound like a pro, just that i using basic layman terms in my understanding. And yes its none beauty related some how but i looking to expand my blog as i find my everyday lifestyle revolves more on photography and food. Beauty is still on my alley do not worry!

Thank you Origins and Nikon for the event and thanks Richard for the opportunity to try out the new Df! oh and Fang wen from origins for being my subject to test out the Df :)

Have a great weekend and keep a look out for my review on the origins plantsciption range..
